Default flared or transition pipe ?

i need to transition from a 2" to 2.5" from my header to my exhaust . i want to use a flared pipe for this being that i can buy it for 1-2 bucks locally while the transition pipe is about $25 . but i remembered reading a post from dave at smsp that stated something about exhaust flow and its velocity using a flared pipe, something that i am not really knowledgable in . of course i figure a transition pipe is the obvious choice to go with . but would i really notice a big difference anywhere whether i used a flared pipe compared to a transition pipe ?

if not a flared pipe, i was planning to go with something like this http://www.jegs.com/photos/5201103038.jpg
