Fab Welding Table I Made At Work
I know I like looking at pictures of things people made so I am posting this for everyone to see. I made this at work, I was very tired of making things on the uneven floor, and I needed a nice big straight surface. The top is 4' x 8' 3/8" thick steel. The legs are 1/8" thick 3" square tubing and the wheels are from McMaster, they are rated at 1000lbs each. The table altogether weighs roughly 650lbs and should safely hold 2000lbs. Price for materials and my time equates to roughly $1500 -1600. It's great using tax payers money instead of your own. I could never have afforded this for myself. (btw I work for a municipality). I am still not totally finished with it yet. I plan on using POR15 on the legs and underneath, leaving the top raw. And also welding something underneath for attaching the welder ground. I rounded the corners too so as not to puncture my stomach. But being that its Spring time I got totally swamped and have to put this on the side for now while I finish getting things ready for Spring. I'll update whenever I make some more progress. Cheers

I can list a complete parts break down tomorrow (I'll have to grab the paper from work tomorrow). The top cost more than $350. Each castor was $114 (they hold 1000lbs each). Plus I figured roughly how long it took by my hourly pay.

We have a tire machine and balancer and of course the Millermatic 210 (what I used to weld the table), oxyacetylene torch, in ground lift, lawn mower blade sharpener, etc. I am their one and only mechanic so I have pretty much free rein, as long as my job gets done. It's a pretty sweet gig.

Big work surface is sweet. I have to modify one of our drag mats (for the baseball diamond) and it has to be square but there is not one level square inch of that damn shop floor. Plus welding on your knees just sucks. Now I can finish the drag mat on the table. I do alot of small engine repair too so I can just throw those on the table too and have enough room to keep all the parts together.

I hate it when that happens, seriously. Table looks good

Ok here is the price breakdown as promised.

6x6 plates $37
3" Angle $115.50
3" Square $167.60
Casters (all 4) $438.99
My time $343
Por15 (estimated price) $150
Total = $1631.09

The height is 31" off the ground

I thought about that, I was going to grind the corners, but I will see how it goes. If I catch my ankle once, I'm getting the grinder out. The overlap on the top is 6" so I might not have a problem there.

Maybe so but like I said it's not out of my pocket. I needed some beefy wheels and those fit the bill. Each one of those wheels holds 1000lbs. And the table which ways roughly 650lbs rolls like butter even if pushing it with one hand. I am very happy with the wheels.
One more picture for good measure. Sorry it's crappy, this is after I started applying the POR15, shows the shop and my desk a little better.
