A 915 can handle the power level you are looking for and it will fit in your chassis with a few mods. 400 hp with little torque and proper driving technique will go long ways to keeping a gearbox alive. Using a 915 with a cooler and pump will help even more.

But if you are set on road racing something, you can look at several different options, but a C5 Vette is a decent package right out of the box. You could do a GTA or ex Circle track car. They have strong parts available and you can build 700hp without too much trouble. You could run a Turbo 944 or 930 if you could find one cheap.

Maybe you should look at the bike based purpose built race cars. A DSR or F1000, is a goo package and faster than you will be able to drive for a long time.

The external dimensions of the 351 are the same as the 302. I think the bore and stroke were just increased a little. I've never been real into domestics, so I'm not sure how much larger a big block would be.
Is there any reason to go with the 302 instead of the 351? Does it rev faster or something? The price isn't that much different. I guess there's more aftermarket speed parts for the 302?

Wrong. The 351w is i think something like 3 inches taller or wider some **** like that. The block is a little taller. The heads can be swap around. But you need a 351 intake on a 351 because the space is wider between the heads.

I agee with Dave. A Miata would be your best platform, IMO. So much can be thrown in there. Sr20's, F20C, 302, ls1 (these are ones i have seen on the interwebs). What ever floats your boat.

the old datsun Z cars are very light and have a little more wheel base than the toyota you are looking at. a 240z with stock block sr20, adapter plate and vg trans, would be a kick *** combo and big bang for the buck.
