What kind of a welder? How would you rate your skills, 1 to 10, for using a hacksaw, and using a welder?

If you do it out of mild steel and mig weld it you will be fine.

I'd say its about a 3 out of 10. Just make sure you buy more bends then you need. To prep for welding, just bring it down to bare metal with a wire wheel. That should be adequate enough. Also make sure you have a decent cutting tool. At minimal a sawzawl or angle grinder with cut off disc. You want everything to fit up nicely so welding is easy. If you want to be slighly crafty and make sure you don't have any leaks cut everything long, bring the stuff to a muffler shop and have them expand the tubing. Slip fit connections are always nice.

For you, I'd give it a 6, maybe 7, sounds like you've never done any fab. Just be sure to order a LOT more than you need, you're basically going to build 2 in scrap alone. If you've got a partner who knows what to do, this would be an easy project.

My rating system -

1-2 = I **** tabs harder to make than that
2-4 = Square tube and plate
5-6 = Round tube/pipe w/ bends, but plenty of space
7-8 = Same stuff, no space, tight tolerances
9-10 = Good luck with that.
