Default Design programs ?

What are some good design programs out there ? I don't need a program that is for cad or anything like that. I just need a program where I can type in dimensions and get a pic of it piece and the dimensions.

thats how cad programs work... just download a trial version of autocad, or if you are willing, get it illegally via bitorrent or whatever you choose...

I use Autocad for the Architectural drawings and have to let you know that the "full" program costs three grand!

However, I'd recommend that you go by CompUSA and see what smaller versions of Autocad are available.

If you keep with a version of Autocad, the drawing files you generate can be used by others with Autocad. It's kind of an industry standard.

Well I need a program because I need something cut with a water jet, the guy said he needed the measurements and instead of sending paper over which way take a while I wanted to email him pics with the measurements. Will autocad be able to do what I want ?

you could just give a scale and use something simple to draw it up. not like paint or something, but i don't see how you couldn't just write down the measurement and mail them to him and not worry about it. Waterjet cutting is pretty simplistic, and i don't see you really needing a Cad program. I am guessing it is a flat or relatively flat peice being cut, and if he is using stock just have reference point from which all other measurements are taken and write them out. if you do it well it should be very simple to set up.

Dang, just draw it up by hand with dimensions and fax it to him.

In reality, all a program like Autocad will do for you in this situation is not allow you to put in bogus dimensions.

Just check your dimensions several times and verify that it all adds up.

If you take a course in it (and I'd recommend it), then ask the instructor if the maker (Autocad) offers a "student" version. Years ago it was possible for a student taking an applicable class to get the program for half off!!

Forget about AutoCad, it's past. Get yourself Autodesk Inventor (same family). It's much easier and more powerful. But to get legal program.... well, in my country costs over 5 grands. I don't know who can afford it, students earn around 3$/hour. But i have no clue how is with that on the west
