ok, so, im making a custom gauge setup for my car, and im wanting to construct the actual plate that the gauges will sit in out of metal. any advice or suggestions on what thickness of metal to use? thinking alum or regular steel.
The thickness is up to you. Thinner will be easier to make the cuts and drill the holes and also to make any bends that you need. Thicker will be a little more sturdy and a little bit easier to mount to.
I like aluminum for this kind of thing personally. It's easier to cut and drill, and it's lighter. Just be careful, as the finish is EXTREMELY easy to marr. 1/16 (.065) is a good thickness for me, but you can go pretty thin without issue (I think I used 22 gauge galvanized sheet for mine).
