Default shimming my diff.

Hi I am currently thinking about putting my tranny back together this year.....lol long story, but I just ran into another problem or snag that I am faced with that I don't know what to do. I put my Diff. in the tranny and torqued the bolts on the casing to get an accurate reading on what size shim I need and going off my feeler gauge, I am needing a .63mm shim or a .60mm. something really thin. I have 2 1.50mm shims. I've looked online @ hondapartsdeals and acuraoemparts and the part numbers are the same(good) but the thinnest shim they offer is 1.0mm. what should I do?

Do you have .60-.63mm clearance now? If so add that onto the thickness of your current shim minus the clearance that you are shooting for.

I measured the Diff. installed in the tranny with the shim removed. .61mm is the clearance that's closest. I'm not sure what your telling me? I currently have a 1.5mm shim that I removed from the casing to measure for a new one. does this make sense? the LSD is bigger than the OEM by .87-.90mm? I pulled a 1.5mm shim from my other tranny case also. I'm not too sure what to do at this point. leave the tranny with no shim and have a .61mm clearance or what? what are the pros and cons of having it too loose. I know having it too tight will eat bearings. help!!!

Same issue I've had with a few OBX LSD's. unfortunately, about the only thing out there that will work as your shim will be either piston oil control rings or other thin piston rings. IIRC, a Honda oil control ring retainer (the ring that holds the insert in) is about .017" thick. That will have you a little loose but the general concensus on here is that you can run a little loose and that's better than running them tight (.000-.004") as someone said they'd seen bearings get burned up in an application that got beat on.

81 mm piston oil control ring with just a tiny bit knocked off the ends will fit in there. Just one more of the downfalls of the OBX LSD....

First make sure the diff bearings are pressed on fully.

that's the first thing I'm going to do. I wanna make sure that .61mm is the clearance I have. They were pressed on but maybe one isn't down all the way. Napa's machine shop installed them, they looked good but I'll recheck them. these are new bearings too.
