Default Shifting without using the clutch

So I am going to replace my drive train, so I figured I would try to learn to shift without the clutch. I have a 88 CRX Si with a DX tranny, a stock heavy flywheel, and a B&M short throw. Didn't take too long to figure out, but I am still missing the shift about 20% of the time. I have seen videos of people doing it at low RPM, but I have been doing it at high RPMs.

The DX has very wide gearing, so 1->2 and 2->3 is taking longer than using the clutch still, but 3->4 and 4->5 is almost instant.

This is what I learned:

1. Do not look at the tac, drive as you would normally. You have to feel, and hear when you need to engage the gear.

2. Releasing the gear is easier if you spike the accelerator, or if your neither accelerating or decelerating.

3. Engaging the gear is easier if your RPM is falling. The same is true with down shifting. Engage with a quick smooth movement.

4. Do not hold the shifter against the sncryo, you are holding the sncryo still at that point.

5. If you don't get it in gear, do not try a second time. You will just grind it. This is true if you get pass the syncro and not in gear, or if you don't get passed the syncro. Put it in neutral, and use your clutch.

This both saddens the tranny builders due to the abuse, but also makes us happy with the higher than expected repair bill when they get tore up.
