s40 bad diff bearings ?
hey tore down a spare trans to replace input shaft bearings (was told they where bad when i was given the trans) they where still intact when i removed them the top mainshaft bearing was louder then the lower one . when i spin the diff bearings they are noisy . so if i replace them do i need to worry about the shim thickness ? and whats the best way to remove them from the diff ? are they a common failure on the s40 ?

Re: s40 bad diff bearings ?
The lower ISB will normally have its bearing cage fail. The upper one is fairly common to see pitting on the ball bearings themselves. That may be where the noise is coming from with that if you inspect closely.
Diff bearings need removed with a bearing splitter and puller. Bearings are so close in tolerance that you'll likely not have to touch the shims, but never say never.

Re: s40 bad diff bearings ?
i replaced the main shaft bearings already (isb) the cage was still intact on the both bearing's and the top made more noise when spinning them . i have access to a splitter, puller and press so that's not a problem. how would i check the clearance if i replace them ?
