Default Help with trany options.

So I have an EF Hatch with a 90 Ls swap and Ys1 Gsr trans in my car. I have a bad diff in my car at the moment, so I'd like to swap it out. I found someone with a 95 LS trans. So my question is, can I just swap diffs or what would I have to do to get everything to work?

I like the short gears I have and rather not put in a hydro trans. Can I also use the gear LS 5th gear for highway driving or is this all improbable?

you can use the hydro ls 5th gears and diff in the ys1 it will all work as long as everything is shimmed correctly

i would recommend an mfactory lsd and some carbon syncros while its apart to make that ys1 bulletproof
thats the setup i have and i absolutely love it

Yes the 95 LS diff will go right in the YS-1 transmission. I am not a big fan of the RPM drop from 4-5 with an LS 5th gear swap. Up to you though? Just depends on what you are doing with the car. If you are looking for lower RPM's and trying to be economical on fuel, then an LS 5th gear swap will be for you.

My biggest problem with the short gsr 5th is driving down the highway at 70mph and being at 4k rpm. lol. It's nice to not have to drop a gear to pass but it just eats gas. Plus when racing, how often do you get into 5th in a 1/4?

Starting a LS-V build soon, just got the spare motor and trans yesterday. Not too sure if I really want to use the LS diff with my trans, even for a temp fix, after reading up on the different diffs. I'd really like the mfactory helical diff but I'd rather put the money into the motor for now. My diff only gives me issues when the car is under a good load, just driving regularly it's fine. I just get really bad wheel hop on the right side when launching, and everything as far as suspension is new.

If you are going for 1/4 mile than an LS 5th won't be a bad option if you are finishing in 4th gear. If you are running on a street tire or small slick and not making traction it can kill your ET's if you have to hit 5th.

Just remember that a transmission build is just as important as an engine build since it does the work of putting the power to the ground. A stock diff is only good for so long and is a ticking time bomb on when it will shoot the diff pin out of the case..lol! Then in the end costing more time and money to fix. If you have to wait a few months to save up for a diff...I would suggest that. Look into the Quaife and Wavetrac units as well. We have used both in our customers builds with great success. The Wavetrac is made in the USA and the Quaife is a UK product. Both have lifetime warranties as well.
