final drive question
I have been working on cars for around 40 years and I have a question. I come from a road racing and oval track background. Why when you want to change to a numerically higher final drive rather than go numerically lower. To reduce wheel spin in the oval track cars, I always would go as an example from 6.00:1 to 5.80:1 and keep going down until engine wouldn't pick up coming out of a corner, then I would know to go back to the previous step. This allowed the engine to perform and the chassis to do its job minimizing wheel spin. Would this allow for better launches at a drag race and not running out of gear in a road race.

I prefer as short as gearing as your needed top speeds will allow. Traction is solved by the LSD settings, tires, suspension and aero. A drag trans is going to be vastly different than a circle track trans so there isn't any comparing the two.
