Default Difficulty Level on Installing LSD?

Firstly I have a B16 Tranny S4C and Obx Lsd.

Okay I'm not asking how to install an lsd! I already have pages for that.

I'm asking what's the difficutly on installing one of these? Can anyone tear apart a tranny and put in this lsd? Also what's the time frame it took you to install or someone you knew who did it. Any special tools needed?

it's pretty straightforward...should take ~2 hours (give or take) not including if you have to yank the transmission. i wouldn't say anyone can do it, but they need to be somewhat competent. transmissions intimidate a lot of people. the ring bolts are reverse thread fyi. most importantly, check the clearances.

I'm not sure, I know alot about engines but hardly ever had to go into a tranny. So I'm thinking I might have to take this to a shop to get done correctly. Please talk me out of it.

Get a Helms and follow the factory procedures outlined in the manual. If you're not a dummy, have the right tools and the right instructions, you will be just fine

*and instead of talking you out of it...i think you should do it. save a good grip of money and learn stuff that could help you and others out later. there are more than enough trans techs always on here to help assist with any questions etc.

I meant to talk me out of taking it down to a shop. I've been looking around for a good link or even a how to but I can't find much on lsd's. Owner's manual doesn't talk about installing an lsd.

you will need some special tools, about $125-$150 worth, access to a press (preferred) for the diff bearings, etc.

Don't hurry, you will need 8-12 hours spread over a few days for your first LSD.

Take pics.

Those that do a LSD install in two hours are not checking the other parts, like the oil passages for debris and other weirdness. One clogged oil passage in the countershaft can ruin both outer bearings and then you have to take tranny back out again, not fun!

Well I don't think my dad (helping me finish this build) will swing for that. I might just take it in to a shop to get it done correctly.

From what I hear these things last forever or they break on your way home.

Ya since your like 15 you should probably get daddy daddy to take it down to the shop for you. You need some sort of intelligence to install a **** OBX LSD.

Very easy (though I do them all the time). Takes me roughly 8-9 hours (not including if I have to pull the trans). But I tear the trans down completely, inspect everything, and check all clearances.

There's a difference between doing something and doing something "right".

If it were a matter of a contest, I could swap an LSD into a trans in probably 5 minutes if I were prepared...doesn't mean it's a proper installation.

It's best to inspect, clean, and replace parts that are known to wear(ISB, seals, etc), when you have the case halves opened up. It's not routine maintenance to open up the trans and disassemble the shafts and clean oiling passages

i had this exact same debate. should i rebuild my GSR transmission and install an LSD? after doing some math i realized

1. LSD $400
2. value of GSR box $400
3. bearings, bolts, clips and sealant $200

we'll just say i had a $1000 value minus labor

for $1300 i picked up a new in the honda box ITR transmission with a better LSD {honda vs OBX} and now have a brand new unit along with tighter gearing.

since you already have a b16 box and the OBX you most likely should have someone who's done this help you. there are good videos on youtube of how to do the install you should also watch. to others, consider what i did, it's easier IMO

Well, when someone that deals with many Honda trannys, we seen the known weak points.

Can the jockey a AAMCO know the failure points on every tranny, no.

This one time, I was installing an ITR LSD and wanted to replace the diff bearings. I wasn't able to remove it using the hand puller, so I took it to the shop and used the press. The bearings were on the diff so tight that it sheared off the nose of the housing. At least I got the bearing off. Now I just need to figure out what to do with 3/4 of an ITR LSD.

Use the top housing (bottom if its sitting on the bearing hub on the ring gear side) as a candy dish.

Alright well I've been trying to look around for how to's on this subject but haven't found nothing good.

I have decided that I'm going to put it in... As someone said, I will save cash and might learn a thing or two. When I need to use a press for the bearings we are just going to take it down to our local Napa store. Hope I can get it worked out.

Why would you need a press???

Just pound the bearings on per Helms instructions.

Put the OBX in the freezer, put the bearing in front of a electric heater.

Normally just drop right on, or used a large socket.
