Default B16 Snap Ring Countershaft

Hey all,

So I've recently replaced all synchro rings and synchro sleeves (both main and countershaft) on my B16 (Y21) transmission. This was my first time doing a rebuild and I made sure I studied the service manuals, forums, etc. months before I attempted this. Everything has gone well so far but now that I am at the end I cannot seem to get the snap ring seated on the countershaft bearing. I am sure that everything has been done correctly, I have made sure everything was able to spin freely, all gears are functional as I have been able to bench shift everything smoothly, the case was able to drop onto the bell housing smoothly and without problems, but I can't seem to get this snap ring to seat.

I have tried opening the snap ring with pliers and tried pulling up from below the 32mm nut with a screwdriver, but because my screwdrivers are a little cheap they start to bend before the countershaft can be lifted. So I did the same thing with the pliers only now went for the option to hand thread some of the bolts into the bell housing until the snap ring stayed open on it's own. I turned it around and tried to drop it on some wood, but to no avail. I continued to drop it a little harder every time but nothing.

So my question is, how do I get it to seat because it's only a few millimeters from seating? Also, with the snap ring squeezing on the bearing the way it is now I tried to spin the mainshaft and noticed it doesn't spin as freely as before, but I am assuming this is so because of the snap ring pressing on the bearing?

Thanks in advance!

Jochem

How high are you dropping it from onto the wood? Sometimes they can take a good amount of "pressure" to seat. If it doesn't easily snap in by prying don't try anymore, lots of cases are broken this way.

First I tried from about half a foot, then I gradually went up to about two feet but to no avail. I've also stopped with the screwdriver trick, I just feel with the amount of pressure I need to put into it that it'll break the case. Any other ideas? I'll continue trying things out tomorrow.

It should have seated from 6 inches. Do the bearings and forks have oil on them or are they dry?

I've oiled all the bearings and forks. I can't for the life of me figure it out.

SOLVED! So this is what I conclude. In my garage I have an inspection pit which is covered by wooden planks. I put more wood on this and banged away. Problem is that when I dropped the gearbox the wooden planks from the pit would recoil and the gearbox wouldn't absorb all of the blow. I moved the wood to concrete, dropped it from six inches and clunk... It's in.

At least, that's my theory.

Aquafina, thanks for all of your help, it's really appreciated!!
