80% torque increase would be??
Most clutch kits are rated at a percentage of increased torque capacity. I have a 97 gsr, it's putting down 240ft lbs of torque, so if I'm doing the math correctly I would need about an 80% increase in torque capacity. Which typically equals out to a stage 2 clutch. And I correct in this assessment?? Whenever I ask people want to sell me a stage 3 which would have a harsher engagement than a stage 2, and I'm trying to go with the smoothest clutch as this is mainly just a daily driver which I encounter some heavy traffic.
Its modified quite a bit, I got a custom T3 Turbo set up, running 300WHP and 240TQ on the dyno, so basically an 80% increase from stock so I would assume when they state the clutch rating at 80% increase it would be very similar. Most stage 2 clutches are rated at 70-90% increase and are a full sprung disc and are the closest to stock. Most places I've called to get pricing on clutches are trying to sell me a stage 3 clutch which typically are a puck style or segmented style, Mpst are rated at 130% or more increase, both I would assume grip much harsher (less slippage) and would be too aggressive for the driving I mainly do. I may autocross the car once or twice a year and the rest of the time its just a daily back and forth to work. Just trying to get some opionion of people that have any of these set ups.
If you are actually making 80% more torque than stock (which you are), and you get a clutch that can only hold 80% more than stock, you are alreay at the limit of that clutch, and I wouldnt expect it to last very long. If you go with a clutch with a 100%+ torque increase rating, you are well within its limits and it should last just fine. JMO
Maybe my math is off here, but how is 240 lbs-ft of torque at the tire only 80% more than the stock 127 lbs-ft at the flywheel?
80% more than 127 is 229.
80% more than 127 is 229.
Yes that's true, I wasn't sure if they are rating the % of increase from the flywheel or off a dyno with real numbers since there are such discrepancies on those values... Looks like I'm going to have to go with a stage 3... It's too close to borderlines with a stage 2 since most tend to be 50-90% increase....
