1st and 2nd Gear Problems.
Ok I'm in the middle of turboing my EM1 and we installed a new obx lsd and then installed new clutch got the engine in and bolted it all in. And now when we try to shift, it clicks into 3rd 4th 5th and reverse, but it doesn't go into 1st or 2nd my buddy from MMI (motorcycle school) that was helping us do this project says that sometimes the tranny gears aren't lined up but once you get it started and go into the other gears they will fall into place? Ofcourse I don't want to get through this whole long process then figure out I have to tear everything back out to look at my tranny.
Any advice on this?

crock of BS. it will shift every position or it won't. nothing will fix itself or line back up upon starting etc...i doubt it was completely reassembled correctly. try and take the detent ball and springs out and see if that helps shiftability into 1st and 2nd. if not you might have to go back into the transmission.
*before you reinstall a transmission, you should always shift it out of the car with a screwdriver or a spare linkage and also spin the mainshaft to feel for any binding or resistance in neutral and all gears.

hmm ok. do you have a short shifter or anything like that? so besides shifting, did you guys spin it to make sure it was smooth and there was no binding?

try and take out the detent for the 1/2 fork. the ball and spring may have jammed and locked up the 1/2 fork in N...it's worth a shot. if the ball and spring come out seperate, and still won't shift 1st and 2nd, then you might have to go back in the transmission.

if it's jammed right it'll lock that fork. basically taking it out would unlock it and will eliminate any possiblility of this. if it is and it works, replace those parts. if there is still a problem, could be something else inside...

glad it was an easy fix for you too and you didn't have to drop the trans again...someone else just had the same problem as you.
