do these things help at all or is it just looks?

preparing for newbie autocross.

also, what about the bars over the struts....
150 bucks for name brand or 30 buck for generic adjustable ones?

the best mod for autox is seat time. Nothing else you do will ever make you faster. The strut tower bars help if you get real ones. I have Spoon bars in the front and rear and they are a nice big chunk of metal, with strong attachments. That bar is only as strong as the weakest part of it, so avoid drilled out bars or bars with small attachment bolts or a thin base.
I saw an Eclipse rs the other day with the biggest double aluminum wing I have EVER seen. It was amazing. It was about 8-10 inches wide, extending 3-4 inches out from the body of the car on each side and was so tall that it was actually higher than the roof of the car! I was laughing so hard I almost swerved into the next lane.
Have fun auto crossing! It will make you a better driver too.

wings work, plain and simple.

They actually work at all speeds, but at lower speeds you dont NEED a wing. If you are gonna start autoxing, dont waste money on a wing. upgrade your suspension as much as your class will allow.

But I agree, practice will make you faster then anything you can buy.

For instance, me in my 96cx with stock motor was faster then LOTS of cars at this weekends autox. And I'm talking SI's, mustangs, integras etc. There cars are no doubt faster, but maybe my suspension and driving was more up to task then theirs.

.... I'm sorry, wings DO NOT work as a performance upgrade for autocross!

Please do not get a wing, it really isnt necessary. It will not help you in the least if you are autocrossing, it can only hurt by adding additional weight and drag to your car.

Make sure you take care of the suspension and tires first, before anything else. Additional power doesnt mean squat unless you can use it.

At the low speeds involved, it's a complete waste of time, money, and weight.

In fact, it's worse then that.
1. Since it's behind the rear axle, if it doesn't work, the weight will *remove* weight from the driven wheel (by a very small amount, granted.)
2. Since it's behind the rear axle, if it did work, it would remove a *lot* of weight from the driven wheels - a bad thing.
3. Very ricey!
4. Identifies driver as "clueless."

rice unless you drive around at 140mph all the time. they slow you down actually. i think all the kidiots who have huge wings are trying to make up for a lack of size in a different area.

The sad things about wings.....the big, ugly ones actually have a better chance of working than the small ones. By placing the wing out of the turbulant airstream caused by the car, it will work better (hence making it ridiculously tall, as in a drag car). However, they don't really contribute significantly until way in the triple digit speeds.

There are hardcore mother* out there that actually put these things on for functional reasons, but these people are rare.

Well they help out by giving a better space for people to push you around the track like a grocery cart
