Default will this work?

If my ignition key is at position 2, will my car start if I put my auto in gear and push the car? Would that be equivalent to a starter cranking?

And another question. What is the concept behind a choke? Why do engine need it when starting cold?

An engine needs a richer air fuel mixture when cold. A choke accomplishes that on a carbed car.
