Default wideband O2 interest

Hi Guys/Ladies

Helping a friend do a quick survey for an aftermarket
a/f tuning wideband O2 sensor. wanted to ask you
guys what you think. He said his company already
has a prototype version, but they dont know much
about "on the street" level interest and finnal design.

What do you think about a piggyback device that replaces
your O2 sensor with a wideband sensor and allows adjustment
of a/f ratio from inside the car, while the engine is running?

i know its similair to the vafc, field and JR's controler but
a key difference that i see is the portible, cheap, wideband O2
sensor and the ability to tune that on the track. ive got some
ideas to give to this fellow myself, but was hoping to get
feedback from you people. I currently use a vafc, but after
2 bad dyno experiences, and hearing about this guy's project
from my neighbor i got interested (i know it sounds corney, but
my neighbor is a phd student in mechE here at UofM, on the SAE
formula car team... wish they's fab a custom header for me...
hmmm, anyway).

questions:
how many of you currently have a/f adjusting mods?

what type of display would you like best?

what A/F range do you currently run at (aprox... i know most will be around 12-15)

is the A/F adjustment enough control or would you like other (vtec i/o etc)

would a $350 price point be reasonable?

would you like a wiring harness to be included?

is a reccord feature important to you?

have you ever been to a dyno to tune?

any other ideas (i know some of you
vets have em, a portible, cheap
wideband O2 sensor should make
most of us drool)?

lmk/tia!

ps- im not earning a cent on this
(no one is now) sounds like a fun
side project and a good product
to contribute to.

pss- HI, im new to honda tech, i was pointed here by
a few moderators on preludeonline/hondaprelude who suggested
that this crowd would be moreinterested in this kinda thing,
as opposed to "dude, look at my new neon and sideskirts!"
type posts.

Is the $350 price with or without the sensor?

hi, thanks

they want to sell the whole thing at the $350 price point, wide band O2 sensor can read from 10:1 - 50:1. i think they could put out a realy good product, but they need some functionality design help and interest gauging (big company, new to aftermarket performance...). If i had my druthers id ask for either 1- nice, accurate, simple O2 sensor with a reccord fuinction and graphed display or 2- a nice piggyback tunning unit that does the above, also work well with OBDII and maybe has timing/vtec control. i use a vafc now, im generaly happy with it but frankly im teird of the speed around here and want to be able to do more accurate tuning on my own... let me know if you have some ideas, THANKS!

WOW great DIY... im sure they'll be interested in that.

thanks for the input,

the company prototyping this product is NGK, im sure if anyone can get production prices low its them, they've also got the OE "hook up" if you will. i think this device could be realy good for track tuning, with a record feature and some time to yourself on a track i imagine this could be a good tunning device.

thanks again, KEAP IT COMING!!

350$ for a 'true' wide band is a deal i would support. A digital display is a must, black case would be nice. It should be able to fully replace the stock O2, interface with the stock ECU and provide an aditional isolated output for dataloging or interface with other equipment (by isolated i mean that a voltage drop on the extra output wouldn't throw off the signal to the ECU)

Thanks

Mike

thanks for the input,

the company prototyping this product is NGK, .....
If that's the real deal NGK, they are one of only two OEM wide band manufacturers (with Bosch) that I know of. Obviously no one else can beat their sensor price to themselves. Plus they know the performance characteristics of their sensor better than anyone.

Everyone else in the wideband market will loose their market share overnight. If its the real deal NGK with a 350 buck strike price with sensor included.

Keep encouraging them to develop it. It will be a winner!

I would recommend a 1 minute non volatile memory with 10 samples per second data logging. It needs to data log an rpm channel to go with the wideband data. Have an RS232 interface so you can playback the data into a laptop and come with laptop software that runs under windows to plot your wideband data and rpm versus time. If they want to know how to do this, have them call me with their checkbook or royalty contract .

Boy am I glad I didn't invest in production tooling..................

BigMoose

Something like this is what I would LOVE to see become more affordable so we can better tune our cars and ultimatly see the demise of dumbasstics. If you had one now for $350, you'd have my money.Cost is the reason I dont own one now. I do use a dyno sometimes when tuning. I would rather have a numer display than guess what color light equals what ratio, I think that method is trash. Including vtec engage would be benifiical in sales, however it would limit you to Honda's only, and from a business point you'd be better off making one for the general public. I agree with an adjustable timing feature, that would be helpful too. A wire harness isnt necessary for myself, but it would make it easier, and not everyone knows, or is confident enough to do their own wiring so a harness should be included.
