Over time the clearance between the cam lobe and rocker arm gets out of spec. If the gap is above specs then the cam lobe is not pushing the rocker arm, which in turn pushes the valve all the way down. If the valve doesn't open fully the combustion chamber doesn't fill with all the air it can. Less air = less power.

Nice. How often should you adjust your valves? Is it hard?

I am interested in knowing too. I think you might need to take them out and re-install them?? just a guess.

If you stay in the high RPM's alot then you need to do it sooner. Also, if they need to be adjusted the motor will make louder clicking noises. Make sure the engine is cold when you adjust them too.

How loud are the tappets on a B-series engine? Mine are quite chattery when the engine is cold. They are still audible after the engine warms up, but only just so. I had them adjusted ~14k miles ago so I doubt they're out of spec, but I'm just curious.

LOL no, you insert a feeler gauge between the rocker arm and the valve retainer. you adjust it by tighten the screw or loosen the screw. I forgot the specs but for my car with a d16z6 I set mind at .007 on intake and .009 on the exhuast side (thats for the zex cam stage 2) still chatterly but that's expected from a performance camshaft.

Your supposed to adjust twice.... Cold, let run and cool down, and adjust again.
who says this? the helms and any other resource that ive checked makes no mention of it...

Adjust them twice..... no matter what the manual says. Better to be safe then sorry. Also, the second time around, you can see how close your adjustment was.... so you know if you should have that next drink or not

I think you need to have the valves adjusted every 30k miles, honda engines with a lot of miles make a ticking sound if the valves haven't been adjusted.

Nobody has addressed the real issue here. The valve and seat wear slightly reducing the clearance over time. If that clearance gets so small or non existent the valves will remain open when they should be sealed. On the exhaust side it will burn the valve. On the intake side the flame front will be allowed to leak into the intake possible fire/explosion.

Conversely if the cam/rocker arm wear then the valves get noisy and do not open as fully as they might if properly adjusted. It is better for them to be noisy than than too quiet (It won't burn the valves).

u need valve adjustment to make sure they arent too lose or too tight

if u remove part of the valve train u should adjust them or for the service intervals

because they will stay open too long and get burnt and that sucks

also u have o do it when it is cold beacuse if u take apart your head when it is still warm, then it can become warped and that is not a good thing

There is no taking apart your head for a valve adjustment only the valve cover. The reason you wait till it's absolutely cold is so that the valve clearances do not change while you're adjusting them. Metal expands and contracts when heated and cooled.
