Why Timing Belts are So Expensive to Replace
Hey folks, Michael here from the front page editorial team with a video I thought some of you may find helpful or enlightening.
I'm sure most of you Honda-obsessed folks know how big of a job replacing the timing belt is, but have you ever watched one being done (or tried to replace one yourself)? Or do you have someone in your life who doesn't understand car maintenance or how to properly care for their Honda? Then the above Car Wizard YouTube video, highlighting the timing belt change on a 2013 Honda Accord, might be perfect for you or them. In it, mechanic David Long, aka The Car Wizard, explains why replacing a timing belt such a time-consuming job and why DIY mechanics need to be extra careful about this one. Not only could you destroy your engine if you make the wrong mistake, but quitting through a partial-replacement could cost you a lot more than bringing your Honda to the shop in the first place.
What do you think about the video & have you ever replaced your own timing belt?
Timing belts are simple to replace.....if you have the right tools and KNOWLEDGE to do so. A lot of folks on this forum lack the latter.
A 2013 has a belt and not a chain? I thought by 2012 everything was chain on Hondas
Replacing a timing chain is a bit more work and challenging than a belt. Timing belts are pretty easy once you know how to get past the pulley bolt.
Also will add, the newer the car, typically the more crap you have to take apart to get access to anything... Older is easier.

TomCat39 the V6 applications are still using a timing belt... which is quite a bit more tricky to swap. There are TWO tensioners and idlers as well as limited markings to get both cams and the crank in the proper TDC positions... much more to watch than what you see on your "single jingle". Heheheh In addition, you are absolutely right about newer cars having more stuff in the way and tighter spaces to work in.
