When using OEM rings do you need to file?
I am building a gsr motor and used all oem parts. I installed the pistons, spun it over and everything was fine. Now I have a scratch down one cylinder wall. Im going to take the pistons out and check the gaps. Do you normally have to file honda rings?

You should have checked the gap before installing the rings onto the pistons. Best would have been to put the ring itself into the cylinder and check for gaps then.
You have to file them accordingly if the clearance required isn't achieved.

I feel so stupid! I did this motor at school and my teacher said nothing about gaping them. I figured since he said nothing, and since they where oem rings I did not have to worry. I called the machine shop today and he said I just need to gap the top compression ring. Is that correct?

Great link! I was looking thru my factory repair manual and it does not say anything about fileing. It says how to check the ring gap and it sayd " If to much clearence, check cyl bores, if not enought clearence, make sure you have correct rings. Im going to check the clearence, but chances are it should be right. If it is to tight, can you file these oem rings?

Yes if the clearance is tight, you can file the rings a bit to make it appropriate. I've seen and heard of it being done before
