Default When to replace a gear?

I'm currently having my transmission rebuilt with a compete gear-speed kit. The tech told me that when you grind gears the gear dog teeth can get pretty chewed up. and that when that happens, you need to replace the gear. My trans had a only 7000k + RPM 3rd gear grind. I never abused it on the street. So it was rarely "hard" ground. I had one trip to the track where it saw some harsh grinding, kinda like misshifting with the clutch.

I was under the influence from all my reading from other infamous 3rd gear grind victims that replacing the synchro ring solves the problem completely. My transmission should only have 60-80k on it. I'm expecting to see a certain amount of wear on the dogteeth, but how bad does it have to be for me to replace the gear?? All synchros will be replaced, carbon coated 3-5. Thanks.

Gears can operate just fine with cracked teeth, wear, etc. But it's always a good idea to replace any noticably worn/damaged gears when the tranny is apart.
