Default What are the signs of a headgasket failure?

My 1998 b20b with 15k on it was all of a sudden burning lots of water and oil... i took the head off but i dont see anything wrong with the head or the block. The only thing weird is a lot of the black coating on the headgasket came off onto the head. Is that what happens?

It's mostly the exhaust side that has all the black coating from the headgasket on it. The cylinders, valves, everything looks fine. no oil in the water, no water in the oil either.

please ignore the pistons, they've had oil sitting on them for a week now and its just making the carbon peel... they looked perfect, no scratches at all... the cylinder walls are perfect too.

but you pulled the head before you knew the hg was the problem? damn thats great troubleshooting right there.

but replace the gasket anyway now that half of your engine is unassembled.

the compression before it started smoking was 205-205-205-205

all of a sudden its smoking badly and the compression is 205-205-205-*225*

when i had started it up, it sounded like a metal object flew threw the intake and intake manifold, into the combustion chamber. I thought it was a bolt or something, but i can find no traces of any foreign objects coming through the engine.

When you pulled the head did your walls and pistons look like they were steam cleaned?

If yes your hg was possibly the problem, everytime i changed a hg due to loosing water i noticed the steam cleaned motor.
