Default What is an open/closed deck?

Somebody told me once that that 92-96 lude motors have a closed deck bottom end as opposed to an open deck found on the later generation. What exactly does that mean though? Thanks in advance.

Closed end means that there is not individual cylinder sleaves standing in the block but one casting with all the cylinders joined at the top by the deck. Open deck is like your typical Honda with nothing at the top holding the cylinders together. If you add a block guard, you are closing the deck of a Honda.
