What happens to the timing knock sensor is disconnected ?

What happens to the timing IF knock sensor is disconnected ?
What would happen to the timing if the knock sensor is disconnected ?
Will it maintain the original timing even if it knocks ? or will retard timing altogether as a safety measure whether knocking happens or not ?
