What does the EGR valve actually do?
I took mine off today so i could pull my manifold to change a leaky gasket. Just curious what its for. It was all covered in carbon build-up so it got me wondering what the heck it does.
It's really just used for emissions and stands for exhaust gas reciculation... When the vavle is open exhaust gases are allowed to be recirculated back into the IN manifold where they are reburned... Carbon buildup is completely normal as you can imagine... Hope this helps, Peace
EDIT: Thanks SoCalAutotech, didn't even realize I put that... corrected

Maybe a little as you won't be reintroducing exhaust gases back into your intake but I don't really know for sure as I've never tried it on the dyno (my guess would be very little if any tho)... On some H22 swaps in the past we've made a block off plate so that you don't have to wire in the EGR and it ran no different...
EGR actually stands for Exaust Gas Recirculation. It doesn't always stay open. Depending on the engine temp and rpm's it will open and close at different rates. The EGR's purpose is to help remove NoX from your exaust. If you decide to remove the EGR valve I doubt you will have any increase in horse power. If your cat. converter is still on the vehilce its going to cause it to work harder.
