Default What does compression mean?

I have never understood it I mean i know what the word compression literally means but I dont know how its measured and what the numbers mean, and for all the other knowledge i know I feel kinda stupid for asking this. But i dont understand what the numbers mean like 8.8:1 and such. Can someone enlighten me or at least give me a website like howstuffworks to help me understand it thanks.

<TABLE WIDTH="90%" CELLSPACING=0 CELLPADDING=0 ALIGN=CENTER><TR><TD>Quote &raquo;</TD></TR><TR><TD CLASS="quote">Compression ratio is defined quite simply as the volume above the piston at bottom-dead-center (BDC), divided by the volume above the piston at top-dead-center (TDC). </TD></TR></TABLE>

More info here.

so what becomes of a motor with 'high compression' ?

the point for all-motor applications is to raise the compression ratio, but in terms of bare horsepower/torque numbers, what is the exact benefit?
