Default Ways to tell if shocks are blown...

I was just wondering if there's anyway of testing if the shocks for a car is in good condition before putting them on. My cousin told me that if i just get the shocks and try to push down it on...and if it comes up slowly, then it's no good...but if it pops right back up..then it's good. Just wondering what do you guys think...thanks ^_^

when you push the strut down, there should be a substantial amount of force from you puching down on it. if it goes down like nothing then the strut is gone.
