Ways to reduce exhaust noise

I recently added headers, 2.5" exhaust piping exiting a ractive muffler 3.5" outlet. It is a little too loud for an everyday driver. Is there anyway to reduce the loudness? I am thinking about a silencer but wouldn't that restrict exhaust gas. Please help before I get another ticket...

I had an exhaust shop weld in another resonator and it did wonders!

welding a resonator will help, putting on a silencer will help out dramatically. and will be easier to switch back from your exhaust note now, and a quiet note. it wont restrict to much where power will be lost'd dramatically, you could always take it off when you need it.
