Default Waterpump failures

What can cause a waterpump to go bad? I have 96 GSR motor with about 30k miles and the waterpump is leaking a little and it has like a knocking noise with it. Engine compression and dyno results are ok. Just wondering what could cause it to go bad since I don't want to be replacing waterpumps often.

Thanks.

Waterpumps do fail, but very infrequently. A GSR waterpump that fails at 30,000 miles is atypical. Replace it, and you should not have to worry about it again for 90,000 miles.

You'll notice if the waterpumps bearing has gone out because you'll get a coolant leak from the weap hole in the outer housing... As long as you are not getting a leak from under your T-belt cover I really wouldn't worry about it... If you do happen to change your T-belt soon then it's best to replace the pump anyways no matter what the mileage... You may say it's crazy but whenever I replace a T-belt, maybe even after only 10,000 miles i'll still swap pumps... Just good to know that your parts are good.. Peace
