Waterlocked motor????
How much damage can be done to a B16 when water is sucked in through a CAI? The kid says there is at least one bent valve, im guessing maybe he meant a rod was bent, and the pistons could be messed up to. I was just going to buy it as a project motor I.E. swap in type R pistons, cams, valvetrain ect. He said he would sell it for 400.00 w/o a tranny. Good deal? no deal? what do you guys think?
thanks
thanks
more likely a rod than a valve.
understand exactyly what happens when a motor gets hydro locked. water is incompressable. as the piston rises in the cyl, it attempts to compress the water. it can't. something must bend. depending on how bad it was, the cyl walls could be damaged. might not be, might only be lightly scored. might be toast, although I see that as unlikely.
i wouldn't buy it unless he let you pull the head and the oil pan. but considering that you are planning to replace all moving parts anyway, it's probably a pretty good deal.

When I hydrolocked my motor, a lot of people told me I could've burned 1 or more valves. This is because the water cools the valves very rapidly when it comes into contact with them. Not sure on the validity of this, just something to be aware of.
Another thing, you need to replace the rods. Even if they dont look cracked, they could be. My car ran for 6 months after I hydrolocked it. It did some strange things occasionally, but was basically fine. It threw a rod when I was cruising the highway at about 3500rpm. Chances are the block is fine, but you just don't know.

We just saw a hydrolocked GSR motor, the #1 rod put holes on both sides of the block. The block is junk. Inspect the motor very carefully before you buy. Inspect the bottom of the cylinders with the oil pan and windage tray removed-if you see obvious signs of the rod(s) hitting the cylinder walls, take a pass.
