Water pump question...
Simple, but I'd like to hear from different opinions..
What are the possibilities of the water pump failing, yet keep spinning?
I've had an overheating problem. Changed the thermostat- didn't help. I also ran it around the block a few times w/o the thermostat. Still overheats. Got a new radiator, still overheats.
I disconnected the top radiator hose and started the car (semi warm/cold), and no coolant ran through yet my water pump pulley is still spinning (no timing belt/pulley cover).
Some say it's my headgasket.. But I want to change the water pump first to make sure since the only symptoms of a blown gasket that I'm getting is overheating. No white smoke, no oil/water mixture, no overflow of coolant.
I hope it's the waterpump..
SO.. What are the possibilities of the water pump failing, yet keep spinning?
TIA

Try A leak down test. If that passes go for the water pump, it can keep spinning and not work. if that doesn't work might have a cracked block or something like that
I've heard of cases where the pump impeller fins have corroded and leaves the pump spinning but no coolant flow is being created. My coworker came from working on saturns and said it would occasionally happen. I've never seen it (on toyota's), but hey, it could happen.
Good luck,
Greg
Good luck,

It happens, but usually when a water pump goes bad the water, coolant, whatever is in there will come leaking out of the hole in the waterpump.
