Water Pump Install
My water pump blew out in my teg. I can't take off the main crank pulley. How do I keep the pulley solid enough to unbolt it. Is it reverse thread or standard?? Any help is gonna be greatly appreciated. Thanks!!!

You can wedge a breaker bar against the ground, then bump the starter. You will want to make sure the car won't start though. A good impact gun always works nicely too.

So if you wedge a breaker bar & hit the starter, you'll actually be TIGHTENING it.
My electric impact wrench couldn't get it. I went to a little shop near home, they loosened it with an air impact wrench, tightened it (not too much) with a ratchet. Then I drove home 1/2 mile & took it off.

Thanks. Thats what I thought. I appreciate the input. The one problem is that the car isnt driveable at the moment. So... unless I get it towed to a shop...I have to do it at my house with what tools I have. Does anyone know if there is a special tool that freakin keeps that thing from moving. The only thing the pulley has is a large hexagonal opening for the bolt. Nothing more.
Yeah, the special tool fits into that big hex opening (55mm?) and you hold the pulley from turning. Then it's got a hole thru the middle where you put your socket onto the bolt. Summit Racing has something like that, browse their website.
If you wanna make a tool, get a big steel nut with 55mm(?) hex size, drill out the middle so your 17mm socket can fit thru. Weld a big pipe or bar onto it as a lever. That's really all the crank-holder is.
Another thing you can do is take off either your starter or the small flywheel cover next to the oil pan. Then use a crowbar or big screwdriver to hold the flywheel at the starter gear teeth. Have someone holding it, because you're really gonna have to pull hard to get the pulley bolt off.
PS... When you're trying to loosen that bolt, make sure the car is either on the ground, or really well supported. Especially if your helper is underneath the car wedging a crowbar into the flywheel. You might have to pull hard enough to knock it down off normal jackstands.

honda, or snap-on, does make a tool that fits in that hexagonal opening to keep the crank from moving while you loosen the bolt with a breaker bar.
I take the starter off and wedge and screwdriver into the most convenient slot on the clutch and/or flywheel. Then I take a breaker bar, stick in on the pulley bolt and stand then stand on the breaker bar. Sometimes it takes a little bouncing to get it loose. Just make sure the bar doesn't slip off in the process.
damn, beat me too it

I made a tool to take it off. I used a 1 7/8 nut off of some big machinery(there is lots of that here in West Virginia). I then welded a handle to it. The 17mm socket fits inside the nut and it comes right off. I think Snap On sells one. ANd check this link http://www.thetoolwarehouse.net/shop/SP-60100.html. I hope that helps.

That link is a rippoff! The total cost after evertyhing would be like 64.00.. The tool is only 39.00.

Thanks for everyones help. Because of my buddies being backyard wrenchheads they decided not to spend the money. We just lowered the engine enough to put on an impact wrench and the bolt came out nice and easy. THANKS. I have learned a lot from your experiences and suggestions.
