A very simplified view:

Sway bars: kind of like a spring that will prevent one side of the suspension from moving excessively in relation to the other side. This helps control weight transfer so you don't overload a tire at any corner causing it to slide.

Strut bar: Binds the top of the damper towers to minimize their movement. This stiffens up the chassis.

Lower tie bar: attaches to the left and right lower control arm mounting points insuring that they don't move in/out during a drive.

I think I have a suspension tech .pdf file on my website:
http://webpages.charter.net/pupascoopa in the "car" section if I remember correctly. Hope this helps!

Sway bars: kind of like a spring that will prevent one side of the suspension from moving excessively in relation to the other side. This helps control weight transfer so you don't overload a tire at any corner causing it to slide.
While they do help control weight transfer they certainly don't limit it or prevent tire overload due to this, they in fact enhance load transfer and, on fwd cars, generally function to limit traction at a single axle, not optimize it. A swaybar equipped car sees more loading to the outside tire than it otherwise would, but the offset in limited chassis roll and attendent alignment change is generally enough to still show benefit (to a point). Stiffer swaybars generally make the driver feel better, but do little for the car's real performance if their purpose is something other than balancing out front to rear weight distribution under cornering loads.
