Vtech??
I'm kinda confused on Vtech. I have a 98 civic ex and i know it has some kind of vtech in it, but i was wondering if i could upgrade the vtech so its like the vtech that u can get with si civics, or do u have to buy a whole new engine for that?? and if i can do this how much would it cost?? please help me out i'm new to this stuff
ok since your new, here.
#1 its VTEC. people will kill you for saying vtech. vtech is a PHONE.
#2 you have vtec, but its half assed vtec (as i like to call it) i call it half asse because its on a SOHC motor.
#3 to get vtec like on the Si's you need to do an engine swap. the engine is a b16a2.
good luck and stick around. youll learn ALOT

SI Engine B16A2 (DOHC)
VTEC on your engine is a cam lobe change on the intake side only while on the B series engines (SI, GSR, TypeR) is on both the intake and exhaust.
I believe that howstuffworks.com has a thing on VTEC.
im kinda new at this too, but i think if ure lucky u can find one in a wrecked si in the junk yard, otherwise theres a lotta websites that sells them for anywhere from $3000-$5000, but to everyone else, is there a good chance to find an Si engine in the junkyard????? thanks

$3000 for Si swap! Too much, you can get GS-R swap for $3000. You can get any B16 (Si motor) for under $3000.

Okay being that you're new to this you're definitely going to beleive that the only way to be fast is to have an Si or GSR engine. That is not true. Learn about Honda engines before you decide you need to run 12 second 1/4 miles. There are plenty of people with 12 second cars who have the same engine you have in your car right now.
There are multiple ways you can do it. Probably the easiest is to pay about 5 grand to have a turbo put on your car with a good clutch and light flywheel. If I had a 98 EX that is definitely what I would do. Plus it's more fun beating all the DOHC guys with a SOHC engine.

How fast do you want to go?- that should be the 1st question.
Next, is this your only car? If it is your only form of transportation, then I would probably stay N/A (Naturally Aspirated) for the sake of reliability-at least until you know more about mechanics of engines. And last but not least, how much $ are you willing to spend?
Now here is the funny part....
If you are anything like myself (or many of the others here)- no matter how fast you get, you will always want to be faster. This in turn will inevitably get you to the point where you break something that is expensive enough to make you need to spend more money- which in turn becomes an opportunity to upgrade to better (hopefully) and faster parts. This is an ongoing cycle that doesn't seem to end. Once the "bug" bites it will never end.
good luck and have fun!

Thanks a lot for all of your input guys. I think i may just stick with getting i/h/e for right now and maybe consider a swap or turbo later on.
