Default vtec question

how would you know if your VTEC is not working? does it always throw a code? what are the most obvious symptoms to look for? i can still tell before if my vtec is engaging or not with a stock exhaust and muffler but now with a 2.5" pipe and a muffler i'm can't really tell anymore.

OK,

1. goto a quiet street and do a first gear run to redline.
2. stop car, get out, open hood, unplug VTEC solenoid;
3. get back in car, do a first gear run to redline;
4. notice any difference?

HTH,

t..

PS this can be done in any gear, maybe it will be easyer to hear in 2nd?

i should have phrased that better
unless you do a cam upgrade
odds are youll never hear vtec.
if you do its not as audible as a b series.

if you have your oem airbox still attached then remove the panel filter and leave the lid off, then drive your car, you will hear the vtec clearly when it comes in. I done this on my beater civic esi (d16z6) and its very noticeable

stock with just I/E.....I/H/E......I/H/E and Zex cam..... all these combinations and i have always been able to hear and feel vtec on my sohc. granted it is much quieter and subtle then maybe a dohc, but if you really know and feel your car, you'll be able to tell. it was definitely much more obvious and audible with the cam tho. the only time i can't tell is now, since i have the greddy kit on

why not just hook a volt meter up to the solenoid and drive the car... see if the voltage changes?

I still say volt meter... best way to know for sure.

I can feel mine kick in too, but if you want to be 100% positive the best way to know is mesure the current.
