Default Vtec arm rocker failure

Hi

Yesterday we have pulled out the engine from our Drag racing Civic Ls-Vtec, the car ran fine for a year and a half only for the strip like one time by month, so now we decided to make some refresh.

PCT pistons, P&P head, Crane cams 11,6 lift in and 11,1 on exh, it made 205 whp.

The surprise is that the Vtec arm rockers gone wrong, we thought it was lubrication problems but every bearing, crank, etc were like new except this,

What thing could fail? we didn´t change the LMA, it has the old style hidraulic piston, could be that?

Any idea?

Thanks

I had a the same issue on my setup. I lost a OEM cam and the rockers.. Due to the springs being to strong. It happend two times thats when i knew it was not a oiling issue.

Check the top of the valve stem where the rocker pushes on it. If there is pits on it .. Your springs are too strong. Just my .02

This is becoming more and more common. I believe its because of the decrease in oil quality available of the shelf now and the fact that the newest rocker arms out of the showroom are now 8 years old.

What oil were you using?

I´m using GT1 10w/60 Liqui Moly with Ceratec

The spring are Crane made for these cams and the top of valves are fine :S.

holy CRAP man why such a thick oil?!?! I'm surprised that oil was even able to make it in between the bearing surfaces.

Modern oils with low ZDDP are the culprit, (in addition to the heavy springs.) During breakin you should use at the least a good diesel oil, but better yet an off road oil with high levels of ZDDP. GM EOS would help also, for break in only.

I run Rotella synthetic anymore after seeing the damage and how anemic zinc is in automotive oils
