Default Very strange coolant leak!

While at a stop light I noticed my engine bay was smoking so I pulled over and it was the sweat smell off coolant. My resovour was empty and I could see coolant puddled on the back of the block. It was night time so I couldn't see exactly where it was coming from but I'm positive I saw coolant on the rear of the block on the timing side, close to the water pump. The next day I filled the coolant back up and had the car idling until the fan came on, but I didn't see a leak anywhere. I took the car for a quick spin and still no leak. I don't have coolant in the oil.

Could this be a water pump failure or headgasket???

That's very odd. Make sure your heater hoses and main water line to the thermostat & main water seal is properly in.

You sure you didn't have your heater valve open when the leak happened? It may be the heater coolant return/out put line back to the motor that is causin the leak.

Verify your heater input and output lines are good hoses.

good luck.

I don't know what the heater valve is?

And about the heater coolant lines, do they flow coolant all the time or only when the heater is blasting? And the inlet is on the passenger side and is the outlet on the drivers side?

thanks!

Try reving your engine all the way to redline. There is more pressure built up on the coolant lines when you run it hard... that may make leaks show up more easily

Have a friend move your heater control switch from hot to cold while you look at the engine bay. The part that moves when the switch moves is the heater control valve. It kind of looks like an automatic transmission kick down on a carbeurator.

slomofo says it all.

Looks like a valve on the firewall with a cable attached to it.

this valve allows coolant to flow thru the heater core when the climate control is on hot (thus the valve is open) and flowing thru the heater core.

When the climate control is on cold, the valve is closed, and there is no coolant flowing thru the heater core and this is bypassed.
