Default valve adjustment

I bought a 1999 honda civic si with a b16a2, it had a lot of after market parts on it when I bought it. I was hearing a ticking sound in my engine, found out that the valves might need some adjusting. So I went ahead and adjusted them, intake to .006, and exhaust to .007 and now it's even worse. I has a friend tell me that I might have aftermarket cam shafts. I have skunk2 cam gears, so I'm assuming I do, but not for sure. If I do have after market camshafts, what would be the specs for the valve adjustment, and if it's the same, what do you think could be wrong?

Default Re: valve adjustment

was engine cold when you adjusted them?

Did you re check clearance every time after you torqued locking nut back down?

This is an engine your talking about, if your looking for a quiet ride I would suggest a bicycle. I have read it should sound like a sewing machine. Maybe

your just thinking to hard into it and its really fine. GL!

PS. I have S2 Pro 1 Cams and it calls for ( .007 IN // .008 EX ) your numbers aren't bad if anything they are tight which would probably make less noise (Chatter)

Go by the book do'em right and if it still sounds mechanically to loud for what is normal maybe start suspecting something else is wrong.

I drove my car to a friends to do it, but waited about an hour and a half till the engine was cool. And yes I did recheck the clearance 3 times over. And it does sound like a sewing machine. Thank you for the response, and not an *** hole response like the other guy on my other post. Lol

Engine should be cold. As in overnight-first-thing-in-the-morning cold. Its still going to be warm after 90 minutes.

The good news is that if you adjusted the valved and it got worse it's likely the valves were in need of adjustment, the bad news is that it's likely you didn't let the car cool down completely and the adjustment was flawed as a result. Redo the adjustment after a completely cooled down night see what happens.

The reason it needs to cool down is that heat expands metal. The engineers designed the valve specs to take into account the expansion of the metal. It's based on a a cold engine valve adjustment.
