Default Unable to start bike

The other day I tried starting my bike and it wouldn't turn over. All lights, etc
were working.
It is a 1994 GW Asp. After consulting the manuel, my friend and I determined that was no battery power to the "start" switch. Further checks to the from the terminal
on pin 4 of the Engine Control Module to ground there wasn't any battery voltage
on that wire as indicated in the check out procedure. So we ran a wire from the
ACC fuse connecter to the connection on the "start" switch and the bike started.

I wonder what could be causing the problem with that particular wire. Is it broke
and if so how to find it?
