tuning w/ an aftermarket cam
I'm looking at purchasing a Skunk2 aftermarket cam :

and was wondering what kind of fine tuning (if any) needed to be done with one of these in conjunction with other internal upgrades (rods, pistons, rings, valves, valve springs, etc)
do i need professional help>?

lol, thats a skunk2 Pro 2.
You'll want to degree in the cams and dyno tune the car. You want plenty of compression for those cams, with upgraded valvetrain (just go with the Skunk2 stuff), and hopefully you have adjustable cam gears.

the pro series cams are more for a real serious engine build. look into the tuner series cams. but even with those i would still do some work to your valvetrain. and you would still hav to get it tuned to get the most out of those cams you just dropped a heavy amount of money on.

Skunk2 cams:
Stage 1: mild upgrade, can be dropped in and tuned, similar to type r cams. you should replace the single springs on the exhaust side of a b18c with duals, so duals on exhuast/intake.
Stage 2: moderate upgrade, require tuner series springs/retainers. can be dropped in.
Pro Stage 1: major upgrade, you should be running high compression, 11:1+ and shouldn't have anything less then a 1.8L. Pro springs/retainers reccomended, tuner spr/rtn can be used
Pro Stage 2: major upgrade, you will now have to check your valve/valve clearance and your piston to valve clearance due to the larger primary's of the cams. High compression and 2.0L reccomended. Pro spr/rtn required.
Pro Stage 3: Big cam, makes car go zoom zoom.
Stage 3: Big cam, makes car go zoom zoomy zoooomy zoom.
Also, idle is compromised on the pro series cams, your will idle will run at around 1k, unlike the tuner series, which don't require much to idle fairly stock. Hope that helped you out.
