tuning help / advice?
well here in a short few week's i'll be installing my 97JDM ITR cams, along with itr springs, single stage intake mani, adjustable cam gears... im confused on how i should tune it. would it be worth my time to pay $300 for hondata, when the nearest hondata tuner to me is 2+ hours away, and charges approx. $300 to tune it. i wouldnt want to drive the car that far untuned. or should i get a chipped ecu? im not to sure how the chipped ecu's work. by the way this is going into a 95 GSR B18C1. do the makers / programmers of the chip kenji, phearable just send you one thats already been made. or do they look into your actual set up. but once its made i can never change anything on it correct?
please dont answer with "search" if you do, then please provide me with a link.
but i did search, and couldnt quite find what i was interested in..

When I looked on here about engine management, there was mostly info on crome and uberdata that was found most easily, I am personally going to go with Hondata, but Crome itself is free, you just have to buy a few periphials, and you have to pay for the professional upgrade. I myself live near a tuner that can tune hondata which helps me, in your case you may want to go with crome as it is free and I hear is user friendly. But in any case you are going to have to get it to someone who can tune as i would not reccomend that you try to tune it yourself, unless you have an extra engine lying around or lots of cash to blow. This is just my opinion, I am in no means a professional, and most of my input has come from what i have found on here. I hope it helps you some!

get your ecu chipped to and get a program thats at least p73 specs.
you really want to stay away from running your current maps since vtec will be way down and bog the high cam.

so i got the chance to call my local speed shop (2 hours away) to see about getting the hondata setup and tuned. well turns out, it would cost me $250 for the hondata + $400 for a tunning package (street tune, dyno tune etc..) = $650 already. but they would need the car for 2 days, due to cooling down processes and such, so i would need a hotel room. this all doesnt not seem worth it to me. for just installing some cam's. so im going to have to steer away from hondata for now. what other options are there at this point. im in serious need of some ideas!?
Buy a wideband, adjustable fpr, and hit the dyno. If you have huge differences in your afr while doing your pulls you might want to purchase a fuel controller. Your setup sounds pretty tame. I remember when Engine management was like $3,000.00 and everybody was tuning old school, including myself. You can do most of your tuning on the street, using some common sense. For your setup, I would run about 18 to 20 degrees timing advance w/ atleast 93 octane, and and an afr reading around 13.3. You'll also find that advancing your intake cam about 2-4 degrees, and exhaust cam advanced 1-2 degrees is the ticket.
If your looking for more power advance your timing. You don't want it advanced so far that you hear pinging, which is detonation. I used to turn the dizzy till I heard a little ping under a load(going up hill), and then backing it off till it stopped pinging. Of course this is all trial and error. Don't be scard
