Default is it true?

i called a machine shop the other day to inquire about hot tanking my block. he asked me how much mileage was on the engine and i told him over 100,xxx. he told me then that i need to bore the cylinders 1 size over. why is that? and also will that raise my compression? thanks!

the machine shop takes the block and dips in a vat of hot chemicals. the purpose is to remove every spec of all the gunk that is built up.

he's goign from the basis of cylinder wear from high mileage and figures you'll be goign with new rings and pistons anyway ... honing will only increase piston to wall clearance so best bet generally is to go over, with stock honda piston and rings, you can go over by 0.25mm or 0.010" commonly referred to a "10 over" ... there are aftermarkets that you can go over by 0.5mm like Endyn rollerwave pistons, but will need aftermarket floating pin rods for those pistons

You should not need to overbore the cylinders unless they are scored (grooved) or you want the extra displacement. Likewise, if the original pistons are in good shape, clean 'em up and reuse them if desired...

The machine shop is probably more familiar with other engines where the cylinder walls do not hold up like a Honda.

yup....don't want the extra displacement.....planning on keeping the pistons (if they're still good) and getting new rings.....thanks guys
