Default Transmission problem on 03' accord

While driving down the hiway the other day I accelerated to pass a car and it the car jerked real hard like it went all the way into first or second instead of down a gear. It also did this under braking. Of course it didn't do it the day I took it to the dealer and it hasn't did it since so they just blew me off. The warranty is getting ready to expire so I would love to get this fixed soon. Any suggestions to what this might be please? I was driving a lot farther and harder that day then I normally do.

Check fluid level. Since it sounds like it's an auto, how many miles on the car, was the fluid and tranny filter changed?

The car has 33k on it and I don't believe the filter or fluid has ever been changed. I thought that wasn't supposed to be done until around 60k? I did check the fluid level and it was normal. Any other suggestions please?

You need to take it to the dealer...
I don't know if the '03s are included, But I had an '01 with a bad tranny...

it's a known problem, and there is a class action lawsuit, which the result is an extended warranty on the tranny.

You will need to check your vin number to see if your car was included in the lawsuit... also check with the dealer, maybe it's still under warranty

Thanks but I already did that and of course they say they can't find anything wrong. I normally just drive the car back and forth to work but on the particular day that it acted up I was on a road trip and was driving it farther than I normally do. By the time I got back the dealership had closed for the day. Figures.

You cant change the filter on that trans its inside you would have to disassemble it.They should scan it and see if it has any trouble codes I have seen alot of the having torque converter failure code PO740

Take it back to the dealer and insist there is a problem with your tranny.

Dealers hate warranty work.

Thanks for the replies. I'm hoping to get it out and really run it this weekend and then catch them open while it acts up. Cross my fingers.

It's true what crazydave said. Dealers hate warranty work and would try to avoid it anyway they can. I've been through a few of these issue's with dealers before and im sure they all work pretty much the same.

Just call the manufacture/main office and give example's/scenerios of your car. But don't mention it's your car. Untill they confirm that the car still has manufacture warranty.

Then say, so where should I drop my car off at? Which dealer?? They'll be surprised. Then if you want, explain to them why you did what you did to see if warranty covers your car because the dealers themselves have given you a hard time. If possible, try to have them fax/send you confirmation that your car still has warranty before you present it to the dealer and take that w/ you.

In your case it's a bit different because your car isnt really broken... But it doesnt hurt to try. GL

dude read your owners manual, nowhere in there does it say replace atf @ 60K miles..its either 15K or 20K and there after every 15-20K...
whenever we get a 03-up accord with a fucked tranny, the owner has burnt atf, from lack of maintenance...

From a techs stand point, you better hope your trans starts acting up soon, because you gonna be stuck with the cost of the repair; being that they have no history of you doing any maintenance on the trans.. If you had had maintenance done they would have more than likely "good will'd" your trans even if you're over your warranty..

They had a recall on the transmission not too long after I bought the car. Evidently they were over heating and if you had less than 15K (mine did) they installed some kind of oil cooler. Over 15k they took it apart and inspected the gears for heat damage. You might be right I may be stuck! Thanks for the replies.

I've been looking in my schedule of maintenance and the only thing I can find for the transmission is check fluid levels (which I do) until 120k then replace fluid. I assume this is correct?
I found it in my book today, I was right the first time 60k.

Now the damn thing is slipping. Done it twice today but then just quit and started running alright. I hate intermitten stuff. I can't imagine having to replace a transmission at 33k. Is there anything simple that can make a tranny slip?

Again tranny fluid level can cause it, or if the fluid is burned up and thinned out it can do it. Although if there was a recall I'm thinking your car was one that should have been taken in and repaired when the recall came out and now you're SOL.

My car (03 2 door accord ex v6, 50k miles) started doing the same thing today on my way to work, which is only a 15 minute drive. It would jump out of gear, have trouble finding a gear, and shift really hard occasionally. Have you heard a whining noise at all from the tranny? I noticed it on my car maybe a week ago but didnt think too much of it till now. I checked my fluid when i got to work today, it was fairly low and slightly brown. I did purchase an extra 100,000 mile warranty with the car when I bought it six months ago so hopefully they dont give me any problems at the dealership, i'm bringing it in tomorrow. Well good luck with your car issues....

Cakuscht, I still have my car in the shop. Seems like they were having trouble getting it to act up like it did for me but they finally did. Now they are putting a whole new tranny in for me. I guess I still have faith in Honda after all. Good thing you have the extended warranty and I 'd take it in and see what they say. Good luck.
