Default Transmission Help

Honda civic Dx Hatchback
Has B18B1
The car is used to commute from school and back home, I will not be racing.

I have a few questions about my transmission that I need help with. I only know a few stuff about honda engine/trans. Today my trans stopped working I wasn't able to go into a gear at a stop light. So I got it to a shop, the guy said that my trans is done and that I would need a new clutch/trans. He quoted me 1.5k~. It was like 450-labor, 500-700 (ls trans),300-clutch and like other stuff like fluid etc..

I want to save some money, and I found this transmission on craigslist
GSR transmission , the guy at the shop also said that a gsr tranny is better he said he was for shorter gears/higher rpms etc.

1. Should I buy the gsr tranny? Would it be more reliable than the ls?
2. Can I install the transmission myself? ( i have no experience with cars, just want a reliable car and save some money)
3. Is the gsr trans shown on craigslist worth it? Judging from the pictures is it in good condition? Link > http://sfbay.craigslist.org/nby/pts/4867844024.html

Please help me out I really need to get my car fixed to go 2 school.

Most B16 and B18 GSR/Type R tranmission within the US are raped. A GSR is more likely to be raped than a B18 LS transmission, same goes for the Civic Si. These transmissions are reliable so long as they aren't raped, along with any other transmission.

Given you car will not go into gear, along with the limited history of the problem you have provided, it should like you have a clutch failure, but I must say a broken axle and differential are also likely given you information. Driving with a failed clutch will cause damage to the gear dogs and synchronizers. I suggest you learn how to maintain and fix your vehicle yourself. you will save a lot more this way, and learn a lot in the process.

If your going to buy a used trans from any where take it to your trans mechanic or any shop and have them inspect it prior to purchase. Of course you would have to pay but you could save by not buying something of unknown condition.
