Default Transmission AT Control Unit purpose?

What exactly is the purpose of the Transmission AT Control Unit located under passenger foot area next to ECU?
If this is faulty can it cause erratic shift points and the complete shut down of operation of transmission?
The reason I ask is my 92 EX Accord Wagon 90K does all of above but if I dissconnect and reconnect battery it is like the control unit resets and tranny comes back to life. Although it still has some shift point problems at times.
I even had it towed to a shop the first time it happened and it worked flawlessly for them.
But it keeps coming back...
