Default Towing while the engine is out

Hey guys, after taking the engine out can I put the wheels back on and towe it to another place. I mean is it safe for me to take it off the jack stands and let it sit on the wheels while there is no engine in the car and no axels attached?

As long as none of the suspension components are loose you will be good.

if there is no axles on... meaning no hub bolt(no axle nut) wouldn't the suspension component be able to fall apart.

**i mean even if you torque the wheel on... the whole hub can pull off of the suspension components.

yeah as long as the suspension is intact youre fine. mine sat like that for 6 months.
its also a hell of a way to go fred flinstone on your ride, just cut a whole in the hood and wear some good running shoes and your ready for a hell of a workout.

flatbed only my friend. dont take any chances with losing a wheel while in route.

you dont need a flat bed. I just towed my project car more than 30 miles saturday morning with no motor in the bay. saved me between 25 and 50 bucks too.

So when you towed your car without the engine in the bay, was it rolling on all four wheels or front 2 lifted???

Without axles and axle nuts. Theres no preload on the front wheel bearings. The bearings could come apart. Not safe to tow with a chain or towhooks, but Flatbed or tow truck are safe.

If you have outer CV joints, even broken ones, put them thru the wheel bearings & tighten an axle nut to proper torque. Even on a flatbed, the wheel bearing is supporting the weight of the car.

You can try to find a great big bolt & nut to hold it together the same way. But the wheel bearing has to be clamped together with the hub or you risk ruining the bearing. Or even losing a wheel...

Well, the suspension is all intact, lower & uuper control arms + tie rod, so won't that just hold the wheel in place on a flatbed? Why would I need cv-joints???

Control arms & ball joints hold the steering knuckle in place. The CV joint, or more specifically the outer axle stub, holds the bearing together & holds the hub into the bearing.
