Torque wrench question...
Hey guys whats up? I know this is a stupid question, but I wanted to ask to make sure. I recently bought a Snap-On click-style torque wrench (QD series) for my engine build/turbo/etc, and I know exactly how to use it but in the book I came across where it says before use to "preload" the tool before every use, and I do not understand this nor know how to do it. Can someone please explain why/how? TIA!!!

my best guess is to run the dial all the way up and down? I have the TQ series and I like that setup alot more IMO. Most of the guys at my work have that style of torque wrench and none of them do any sort of preloading before use. We're flat rate techs at Lexus, maybe that's why? haha....anyhow I think you'll be fine, just use it.
Thanks for the input! It actually says in the book that the "preloading" involves something like setting the scale at 50% and torquing in both directions...just want to verify with others if this is necessary/a good way to do it? Its just that I am putting together my $5k built block and I need this to be as accurate as possible.

i think what it means is dont just throw it on the bolt and jerk it as fast as you can untill it clicks. i think it wants you to gradualy build up torque until clickage.
This could be unrelated, but this is what I had to do when I bought a new torque wrench.
Set the dial to a medium torque setting so there's a definitive "click" when you turn it. Then put it on a bolt somewhere (use your imagination) and click it several times. It's suppposed to work the internal oil (inside the case) into the moving mechanisms inside. But you're only supposed to do this before the first time you use it.

You'll be fine. Just don't use it on your rod bolts. (Stretch gauge!).
