you can't just buy one and have everything. let alone the best of everything.. or even the best of anything.

go to sears and get a craftsman set. it's a good start. probably run you 100-200 dollars.

or if you have money to burn.. track down a snapon, matco, whatever tool truck and talk to the guy driving. he'll set you up well, but it'll probably run you about the price of a new civic or jetta.

all these companies do some things or just something, well. snap on screwdrivers are a must.. but ace hardware's generic store brand has the ratchets that keep me from feeling arthritic.

I don't plan on doing heavy frequent work. I just want a general set that doesn't suck that much so I could fix my Civic from time to time.

how is Crescent?

Get a craftsman set if that's the case its a good start.
If you go one days with sales you can get good deals on impact guns's, impact sockets, if you want a nice set get the profesional line.
Gear wrench sucks *****.
S&k tools is a good brand also sells threw sears.
Buy snap on ratchets if you start breaking them, and use the craftsman sockets.

Everytime I buy a set of the ratcheting wrenches at least one in the set is always broken the first bolt I turn with it.
And if your buying gear wrench off the snap on truck your a sucker. Go to sears you'll save your self some money.
Unless your one of those shop mechanics who stare at your pretty snap on tool box all day and look down on any other brand of tool..

GW sells full tool sets, not just ratcheting wrenches.

I havent had one failure with my set, not that I did with craftsmen much.

I got my 182 piece for $150 with a $50 off coupon at advance auto, so I paid $100..

With craftsman you can bring in broken tools for a replacement. Look for a lifetime warranty. One that you can claim.

Avoid Stanley, Cresent, anything cheap.

Really read the labels on what tools are in the package if you are buying a set. I got the craftsman 200 piece tool set and I work on my car daily and I wish I got the 255, it comes in a much sturdier case, actually a storage chest. The plastic case for the 200 is durable but all of the 1/4" sockets go on the top lid and the plastic locking latch has come undone quite a few times and I ended up just putting all the 1/4" into a ziplock bag and threw them in the corner of the garage

Caution: Tool kits are full of useless (for most people) 1/4" sockets. Craftsman has the guarantee and is not out of anyone's price range

If its just to throw in the trunk I love my 20 piece Stanley kit from Walmart. ~$14

i do buy them from sears thank you, i was simply stating that SNAP ON warranties them and will fix any problems with them. Ive NEVER had a problem then the wrenches. i personally dont use there ratchets, most of mine ARE snap on or mac, and a couple craftsmen, and NO i dont stare at my tool box all day, even if it is snap on but i really dont care considering it holds tools that make my money not the box, so if your gonna make comments like that hop off an dont at assume. thanks.

OP go to sears, lowes hell even harbor freight and find there mechanics starter set and go from there, dick weed is right dont get caught up in the name but if your gonna make a living out of it (like me, id like to have the ones that wont brake) however normal everyday people dont need 30k plus in tools, i do however in my line of duty.

I wasn't reffering to you directly but ok. And what does the last sentence mean?
