Default Titanium Rods - Need help from engine builders/engineers/machinists.

Hi,
I have the opportunity of buying titanium rods from someone a friend of mine knows. They are unfinished (No bolts or bushings, and need to be machined to fit)

The specs are:
C/C 5.400"
pin bore .905"
big end 1.846"
big end width .825"
small end width .800"
weigth 330grms

They would be going on a daily driven turbo 250hp d16 and I have a few concerns:
they are 0.07" too narrow on the big end (crowers are 0.892").
They are untested/ unverified -- Does anyone know a machine shop that can verify them? If so, how much would it cost to verify them/make sure they are fit to be used?
The guy says these rods were originally designed to go in a 400 HP 3.0L custom made v6 but that he dropped the project. He is willing to sell for 500$

Thanks for info. Please do not give me messages saying go with crowers or eagles, or etc. I am really only interested in finding out if people who know more than me about engine building than I do think the size mismatches can still make for a reliable rod. I am told there is enough room to enlarge the Big End, and know that bushings are commonly used to make the pin ends work.

Thanks for all info you can give me.

C-to-C is way too long to use in a D-series without deckplating the block.

3.89" is the C-to-C length on the D16.

Edit: Ignore muy. I'm dunk.

Here are the specs from crower for their d16 rod.

B93745B Honda 1.6 SOHC (D16 series 1988-up)
C to C 5.394"
Big end bore 1.890"
Big Eng Width 0.892"
Pin Diam 0.748" (19mm)
Pin Width 0.716"

Once again these are the specs of the ones I can Buy:
C/C 5.400"
pin bore .905"
big end 1.846"
big end width .825"
small end width .800"
weigth 330grms

5.394" 1.890" 0.892" 0.748" (19mm) 0.716
(C toC) (BE Bore) (BE width) (Pin Diam.) (Pin Width)
The specs are:
C/C 5.400"
pin bore .905"
big end 1.846"
big end width .825"
small end width .800"
weigth 330grms
It looks to me like the specs are off enough to make those rods unusable in a D16.
That's my 2Cents.

even if they would fit I don't think I would go through the expense of putting a TI rod in a daily driver, and $500 bucks seems awful cheap considering a set of TI rods would probably set you back $4,000 or so. Be careful!

do you have someplace that's capable of machining titanium in mind?

cuz if not I think that's where your going to hit a speed bump... even if they can be machined to fit... how many steps and at what cost.

I am pretty sure I know where I could get them machined. The main question is whether or not the Big End width is too narrow, and is there something I can do about it.

ti. needs to have certain heat cycles to make them last. it is near impossible to do it on a daily driven or non race car.

just save yourself the headache and get some other aftermarket rods

I'm not that familiar with machining or using titanium rods. The main problems I've heard from people using them is that titanium is an aggressive metal. It really grabs onto other metals that it comes in contact with. This causes galling and can really damage a crank. The smaller width big end may actually help the rod from coming in contact with the sides of the journals of the crank. Don't quote me on this info though. I haven't done too much research into it. I believe that if what I said is true then your gonna need to get some special rod bearings to decrease the amount of deflection that these rods would potentially have. It seems that your lucky that the big end bore of the rods in question are smaller than the bore size needed. Titanium is a bitch to cut/weld/drill/machine. The machinist that fits these rods will probably wear out several sets of stones on the rod fitter or use special stones to cut the material. I would definitely take them to someone who has experience with titanium.

Do some research on the stuff that I mentioned and you may find the answer.

That was really informative about the titanium rod problems. I am going to be calling a machine shop tomorrow to see if they can help me... If anyone else has more thoughts, please tell me...
